Introduction

US Short Codes are administered differently to those in Europe, so Triangle have written this short document to help those that need some guidance in finding the best code at the best price.

Short Codes

The US sells it's short codes in a similar fashion to selling internet domain names. The ICANN of this sector is called CSCA (Common Short Code Administration) Reading through this site will gain you a lot of knowledge on the wireless industry in the US.

The pricing information on the site states:

Registering and leasing a CSC costs $1,000 per month for each "Selected CSC" and $500 per month for each "Random CSC." The Registry must receive payment in full for the duration of the registration at the time your application is approved. We offer Registration Terms of 3 months, 6 months and one year. Because fees are due up front, if you register a Selected CSC for three months the cost is $3000.00, and Random CSC for three months is $1500.00.

As you can see choosing a 'Vanity' code cost's double the amount of the randomly selected code, and typically these days, these companies want a large fee upfront.

Up to 8 tariffs can be supported on a single short code.

Network Operators

Live operators: Alltel, Cingular Blue, Cingular, Dobson, Nextel/Boost, Sprint, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Verizon

Operators in the US are way behind the UK in terms of functionality and billing infrastructure for short code and SMS services.

Each operator pays out slightly different time scales and some do not even do a cut off at the end of the month. This makes it quite difficult to reconcile accounts for each month.

Once the code is set-up you then have to test your application with the Operators who will also approve or reject how your campaign is to work. This can take a very long time to happen. Minimum time from order made to going live is 8 weeks.

The CCF and ordering tool that you use is a website which gives you updates on the progress of the code. from Ordered, Provisioned, Approved, testing, Carrier Testing and then finally Certified. If your are ever caught doing something different fro what was originally agreed to the Carriers will cut you off straight away, Fine you and then ask you to make changes. The Carriers are very strict and move very slowly.
